The Comet 7-cylinder radial series was designed to take advantage of the boom in private aviation in the late 1920s; It was to replace the relatively unreliable wartime surplus gin that flooded the market in the early 1920s.

The two-piece crankshaft with counterweights is carefully forged from heat-treated chrome-vanadium alloy steel, drilled for light weight and lubricating oil flow. The master and slave connecting rods are forged and made from the same material as the crank-shaft. An induction rotor is carried at the rear of the crankshaft to ensure that the mixture from the Stromberg carburetor is delivered to the cylinders.
The two-piece crankcase is split at the level of the cylinder ctres, with the front half supporting the fwd crank/prop-shaft bearing and the rear half supporting the rear bearing, induction rotor, cam drives and accessories.
